English manners

The morning crowd has dimmed over the past few weeks. The long queue that snaked the station, lining up for Today has shortened tremendously. The mob crowding around the base of the escalator, has also disappeared. It actually took me ten minutes faster to get to office than what I would have normally done. Talk about recession. People are still going on holidays.

A lady was asking her daughter to stay away from the glass doors.

"Wait by the side, and let everyone out from the carriage first before going in.."

Her voice was enunciated with a strong English accent and the noise was carried over the shuffling sound of the morning crowd.

The lady was determined not to let her child lose her British manners, though they are now in the different countries. I am not surprised if she has meant for the rest of the people there to hear. How often have I seen Singaporeans squeezing their way in while the commuters were making their way out.

The train finally came. A young lady was kind enough to let the young girl have her seat.

"Please say thank you very much to the lady for giving up her seat. Do it before you sit down."
